I gotta tell you, this Black Currant Dark Chocolate Dump Cake is basically my dream dessert.
The tart black currants cut through the rich dark chocolate in the best way, so every bite is this perfect mix of sweet and tangy.
It’s super easy to throw together, but it feels fancy like you spent all day in the kitchen. I’ve served it to friends and they are always blown away by how unique it tastes.
The fudgy texture with little bursts of fruit is just irresistible and honestly, I never want it to end.
Ingredients

1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix
2 cups fresh or frozen black currants, thawed if frozen
1 cup dark chocolate chips, at least 60% cocoa
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
1/4 cup whole milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon, optional for warmth
1/4 cup cocoa powder, unsweetened for extra chocolatey depth
2 tbsp powdered sugar for dusting, optional
Why I Love These Ingredients
Chocolate cake mix gives the base this rich, chocolatey goodness, and I swear it’s just the easiest way to get amazing results.
Black currants are tart and juicy, totally balancing out the chocolate. I like chocolate chips with at least 60% cocoa so it is deep and bittersweet.
Butter keeps everything moist and creamy, and the cream and condensed milk make it fudgy in the best way.
Vanilla just rounds it out, sugar boosts the sweetness, cinnamon adds a warm hint if you’re feeling cozy, and cocoa powder makes it extra chocolatey.
Dust a little powdered sugar on top and suddenly it looks like you slaved all day even if you didn’t.
Benefits of Ingredients
Black currants are packed with vitamin C and antioxidants so they are actually good for you.
Dark chocolate has antioxidants too and might boost your mood if you eat it in moderation.
The cream and condensed milk give you calcium and energy, butter adds vitamin A and healthy fats, and cinnamon is great for a subtle health boost.
Cocoa powder has flavonoids that support your heart and give it that rich chocolate flavor.
Making It
I start by preheating my oven to 350°F to get it nice and hot.
Then I lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish so it is easy to serve later.

In a big bowl I whisk together the melted butter, cream, condensed milk, whole milk, and vanilla until smooth and creamy.

Then I stir in the sugar, cocoa, and cinnamon if I’m using it, making sure everything is nice and combined.

Next I spread the black currants evenly on the bottom of the dish.
They make this juicy, tangy base that is just amazing. I sprinkle the chocolate chips over them, trying to get chocolate in every bite.

Then I pour the dry cake mix right over the top, just spreading it evenly.

Don’t stir it yet because that’s what makes it a dump cake and honestly it’s kind of magic.
I pour the wet mixture over the cake mix slowly, covering everything.

I don’t stir because it will soak in as it bakes. Then I pop it in the oven for 35 to 40 minutes until the top is set and a little crispy.
A toothpick might come out with a few moist crumbs and that’s perfect.

I let it cool for about 10 to 15 minutes and sometimes dust powdered sugar on top if I’m feeling fancy.

How I Serve It

I love scooping this warm into bowls with a little vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Sometimes I drizzle chocolate syrup or sprinkle crushed freeze dried black currants on top for extra wow factor. It is perfect after a big meal or as a treat with coffee or tea.
If I want it to look a bit fancy, I cut it into squares and serve on a platter with some fresh berries around.
Leftovers
If I’m lucky enough to have leftovers, I keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
To reheat, I zap a portion in the microwave for 15 to 20 seconds or warm it in the oven at 300°F for about 10 minutes. It stays fudgy and the currants keep their juicy burst.
Tips I’ve Learned
Frozen currants work fine but make sure to thaw and drain them so the cake doesn’t get watery.
Use good quality dark chocolate chips, 60 to 70% cocoa, for the best flavor. If the top sets too fast, cover it with foil so it doesn’t burn while the middle cooks.
I sometimes add a teaspoon of orange zest to the wet mixture for a citrusy twist and it is amazing.
Make sure the cake mix and wet mixture are spread evenly so every bite is consistent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! Tart berries like raspberries, cherries, or even cranberries work beautifully.
Can I make this dairy-free?
Use coconut milk and vegan condensed milk, plus dairy-free chocolate chips and butter substitute.
Can I prepare it ahead of time?
Bake it fresh for the best texture, but leftovers reheat perfectly in 15–20 seconds in the microwave.
Why don’t we mix the cake mix?
Dump cakes rely on the liquid soaking through the dry mix while baking, creating a layered, cobbler-like texture.
